Our feature Client, Mr Barry Wearing

Barry as an Armed Police Officer

Barry Wearing

In 2023, following a sudden and unexpected illness, I was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)—a condition that disrupts the communication between the brain’s hardware and software. For me, this led to sudden paralysis and ongoing complications including nerve damage in my legs, chronic pain, and uncontrollable muscle twitching in both my legs and face.

Living with FND has been one of the greatest challenges of my life. It stripped away not just my health, but also my identity, independence, and career. I had to step away from my dream job as a police firearms officer and navigate a new reality that, at times, felt incredibly isolating.

But amidst the struggle, I rediscovered a lifeline—golf.

Golf was always a passion of mine. As a junior, I competed at a high level and achieved a +1 handicap at my peak. During rehabilitation, as I was relearning to walk, I found myself picking up a putter out of boredom. That small act sparked something deep within me. I started putting around the house, then progressed to trying out an indoor simulator—and from there, I never looked back.

Golf gave me something I had lost: purpose. It reignited a fire in me when I was at my lowest, giving me motivation and direction at a time when I was desperately searching for both. Slowly, I built myself back up to the point where I could return to the course. Now, I live for those moments—especially the thrill of competition. (Just ask my family—I’m still ridiculously competitive!)

Having the support of ADG Disabled Golf Development has been nothing short of transformative. To be backed by such an incredible organisation is humbling, exciting, and deeply motivating. They’ve supported me in ways that go far beyond the golf course. From providing me with upgraded equipment and professional apparel to securing individual sponsorships that give me the freedom to choose the events I play—ADG Disabled Golf Development has given me the platform to pursue this journey at the highest level possible.

They’ve also connected me with one of Today’s Golfer’s Top 50 coaches, and the impact on my game has been immense. With their continued support, I feel not only prepared—but empowered—to compete and prove that their belief in me is well-placed.

Most importantly, ADG Disabled Golf Development has given me something that’s hard to put into words: a renewed sense of self-worth. Living with a disability is incredibly tough, both physically and emotionally. But knowing that an organisation believes in me, invests in me, and supports my goals—that’s priceless.

I can’t wait for the upcoming season. I’m ready to give it everything I have and show what’s possible when passion meets opportunity
